My "Inside Out, Back to Front" Journey to Coaching
March 11, 2024
I've worn many hats: student, union man, ski instructor, husband, father, tech leader, and now, coach. Each stage turned my world inside out yet brought me back to my core values and a unique approach to helping others navigate the turbulence of life.
Phase 1: From Grit to Global Explorer (16-25)
After I left school, London's East End was my tough classroom. Fighting for workers' rights ignited my first passion—being a voice for those who needed it. Adventure called, and I chased it by becoming a ski instructor and travelling the world. I even witnessed the Berlin Wall fall—a symbol of a world opening up and making friends from the east for life.
Phase 2: Ski Slopes to Stability (25-35)
More travel, more incredible people...and then meeting the love of my life brought a longing to settle. Amsterdam became home, with marriage and fatherhood soon to follow. I switched gears to the business world, finding a tech niche.
Phase 3: Unexpected Turns and Finding Strength (35-45)
Raising Max and Jake brought unexpected joys – and the challenge of autism. Inside out, back to front... that was life! Tech became my career anchor, working with giants like Sun and GE. Years of growth and of facing adversity head-on.
Phase 4: Family, Leadership, and Big Choices (45-60)
We moved to Maastricht to support my wife's dream of a special school for our son. My career grew at Dell, leading teams at breakneck speed. Yet, that old union man spirit stirred, wanting to make a difference beyond the bottom line. That's how I discovered coaching and how to combine my passions.
Phase 5: A New Revolution (60 & Beyond)
Coaching became my calling – Coachingshoes was born! This is the era of a mental health crisis and burnout. Much like the fitness boom of the 80s, we need a revolution in how we prioritise our inner well-being. I'm bringing my tech-savvy, union man's heart and coach's expertise to this growing challenge.
Why Me?
I know change. I've felt lost and found my path again. I understand the pressure of modern work and the strength it takes to raise a family. I've learned to value my mental fitness and want to share that with a much broader audience.
